How To Detox Properly

Whether it was a wild weekend away, too many family dinners, or you just over all don't feel good, cleansing and detoxing is a great way to get back on track to feeling better.

What exactly is a 'Detox'? Simply put, a detox is a process in which a person makes lifestyle changes to clear their body of toxins. These lifestyle changes typically involve abstaining from certain harmful things and optimizing body processes. Some changes are temporary, such as following a cleansing diet, others are permanent.

When we hear detox, our mind always jumps to a quick fix or ways that we have seen and heard through friends and social media. These can include detox pills and programs, skinny/fit teas, juice cleanses and more.

A juice cleanse is something that a lot of people gravitate to when they are wanting to detox the body. Juicing isn't making life easier for your body; it's actually making it harder, because it's giving it a small amount of fuel in a very limited form, and most of it is straight sugar. The main advertised benefit of juicing is that it somehow boosts the body into "cleansing" mode, but this is a myth from start to finish. Your body can cleanse itself very well without your help, thank you very much; the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, and other organs are on the job 24/7, and depriving them of fuel is not going to help the cause, as the body needs energy to continue to function. A lot of people tend to complicate detoxing when it really can be quite simple.

Here are our top ways to detox your body that are cheap, simple, and actually work!

1) CHOOSE THE RIGHT FOODS

One of the best things you can do to support your body’s detoxification process is to lighten its load and decrease the toxins you put in your body in the first place. Choose organic vegetables and fruits over fast food and other processed foods. GMO products and pesticide contaminated foods add harmful toxins to your diet. Avoid them like the plague.

2) EAT YOUR GREENS

Detoxifying your body is not only about what you avoid, but also about what you consume. Following a healthy diet can go a long way. There are also many foods that aid detoxification — garlic, lemon, broccoli sprouts, mung beans, and raw vegetables. Many diets promote cleansing and detoxification. Sticking to leafy green vegetables and lean protein helps as well as Intermittent fasting.

One ideal way of getting more leafy greens into your diet is to make them into green smoothies. If you happen to be one of those who doesn’t like the sweetness of the fruit ones make savory ones instead. If you get bored with salads then quickly steam fry them in a little stock with ginger, garlic and onions. Add them to any soup based dishes to make them more nutritious or wilt them in a bowl of steaming brown rice, millet, or quinoa. Don’t forget to add some chopped herbs or spices for extra flavor.

3) DRINK WATER

Water is possibly the most valuable tool for detoxifying your body. The body’s most basic functions require water. Your body needs water to produce saliva, help with perspiration, and remove waste. Drinking water does NOT include coffee! If you do not like the taste of water, try adding water, mint, and lemon to it!
